Lettie Hempstock

I like to think, sit quietly, talk deeply, write, wander without purpose. (I’m not really a traveller, except in time. I mean that I like wandering down lanes, round city streets, up hills, over allotments.) I like to dance, too. I was thinking about how I’m different at 53 to my 43 year self, or 33, or... pricklier in some ways, less inclined to suffer situations that don’t suit me, softer in others, more..weathered, tempered, maybe. Not a girl, or a young woman, or even in the middle bit, but stepping into something new. Some things are the same, kindness, humour, intellectual curiosity, joy. I’m woven in to the place I live, (never thought I’d hear myself say that!), to my relationships and friendships, long tested and much treasured, and to work I love. But there is space in my heart, I find, and a longing, for a shared tenderness, deep friendship, companionship, root-room for something new and lovely to grow.
